Rebuilding Failed Automatic Transmissions

Rebuilding failed automatic transmissions involves disassembling the transmission and replacing the failed or broken parts, then reassembling the transmission and installing it back in the vehicle. This is a complex process and there are different types of transmission models with their unique features.
The parts of the transmission that have failed can be determined only after the transmission has been disassembled. It’s usually at this point that the actual cost of the rebuild can be estimated. This estimate can vary considerably from the actual cost depending on the expertise of the person performing the diagnostic test before you bring your vehicle in for the rebuild.
At our auto repair shop, we have technicians who specialize in automatic transmission repair and can handle your automatic transmission rebuilding needs efficiently. Rebuild warranties are usually for 12 months or 12,000 miles and are not applicable nationwide.

Remanufactured Transmissions

Transmission remanufacturing is far more than fixing the broken parts. We have an experienced technician to disassemble every transmission by hand and check each piece thoroughly. Every part is cleaned, measured, and inspected for correct tolerances and specifications. Any piece that isn’t up to factory standards is either re-machined or replaced with a new part.

Our factory has a $1.5 million worth inventory of parts and owns numerous precision industrial CNC machines so even an out-of-stock transmission can be finished in a few days. We have quality parts from top brands, such as BorgWarner, Raybestos, Sealed Power, and TransTec. We work closely with our suppliers to ensure that whether it’s a clutch plate or a gasket, we’re installing robust components that’ll function even under the toughest conditions.
As manufacturers update their transmission models, issues with the original design get resolved. Our engineering team keeps track of the latest OEM updates and implements them in every transmission we remanufacture, thereby ensuring that whether you have an old car or truck, your transmission will be up-to-date with the latest design.
All transmissions come with a remanufactured torque converter, balanced and tested with the transmission. We pair every transmission with a torque converter so you’re getting a matched set that has been tested as one unit. This prevents many performance problems that can show up after the unit is installed in your vehicle. Each transmission/converter pair is pretested on a state-of-the-art computerized dyno.
Although the cost of shipping a used transmission to the factory for rebuilding, replacing all the parts that can wear, and then shipping it back to the shop is greater than the cost of in-shop rebuilding, the end result is a far higher quality transmission for your vehicle. The time savings are also significant with this approach. Your vehicle can be fitted with a remanufactured transmission in as little as one day. Overall, the quality and time saved result in a better purchase decision. The warranty periods are longer as well.
Our remanufactured transmission warranty is 36 months or 100,000 miles. As we remanufacture the transmissions at our facility, the warranty can be honored nationwide, which is not always an option at small rebuild shops.
Many front-wheel-drive cars have the differential integrated with the automatic transmission. We manufacture both the transmission and the differential when we work on these models.

Superior Products From Certified Transmission

When you buy from Certified Transmission, you’ll get nothing less than get proven, robust parts for your transmissions. The member shops of Certified Transmission stopped in-shop rebuilding in favor of the enhanced quality and dependability of the remanufactured transmissions, also known as reman’s.

If you purchase a transmission from a dealer, you’ll be purchasing a remanufactured transmission because truly new transmissions are not available from the manufacturers. The warranties are seldom over 12,000 miles or 1 year from the dealer.

Used Transmissions

Sometimes, transmissions fail at the worst possible time financially. Used transmissions can be a lower-cost alternative to remanufacturing or rebuilding. These transmissions can be purchased from wrecking yards, inspected for leaks or dry seals, and tested on the dynamometer to be working correctly.

Used transmissions, especially the newer models, come from vehicles involved in an accident that totaled the vehicle, which means the insurance company determined the cost to repair that vehicle was more than the vehicle’s worth.

Purchasing a used transmission involves risk. If the accident was a front-end collision, the engine may have been forced back into the torque converter and transmission, causing a slight misalignment or internal compression of parts. Over time, if this transmission is installed in your vehicle, it can lead to premature failure.
If the used transmission came from a vehicle in a hot and dry climate, the seals dry out and often shrink just enough not to leak at the time of testing but can start leaking transmission fluid in a short time.
The mileage on the used transmission is unknown. The usage of the transmission by its original owner is also unknown. In short, you’re gambling that a used transmission will last long enough to make it a good buying decision. As with remanufactured transmission, if used transmissions are in stock, you don’t have to wait for weeks to get your vehicle back on the road.
